I knew how valuable a smoke machine was for many types of diagnoses and decided to make my own instead of forking out $1000+ for a commercial one. I first bought a fog machine on eBay which didn't work the way I thought it would. I then searched the internet for other home built machines and came up with my own design. It's been awhile since I made it so I don't have a detailed step by step build, but from the pics you should be able to get the idea. I just put together some pipe fittings and used a glow plug to heat the baby oil, which I found works quite well. I found it was important to surround the glow plug with some fiberglass insulation for it to work. I like the fact that I can adjust the pressure of the smoke with the regulator I had laying around, although I found that too much air will cause a fire in the chamber instead of smoke. Maybe someone can come up with a modification that will alleviate that. Maybe angling the air inlet upward. The baby oil does need to be kept at the proper level and needs to be topped up as needed which can easily be done by unscrewing the top pipe adapter. I found that saturating the insulation up to the top of the glow plug works well. I'll be happy to answer any questions that you may have as time permits.

Best wishes & happy building, Mike
