Running an oil pump without the engine running....

For diagnostic purposes or for critical oil pressure priming on a new engine can be tricky.

For older engines whose oil pumps are driven by the shaft of the distributor, get an old discarded distributor and remove the drive gear.

Then modify the upper shaft where the rotor would go so it will fit the chuck of a drill. Install the modified distributor in place, attach the drill and run it until full pressure is attained.

You can go one step further by removing the upper housing of the distributor because all you need is the tube and center shaft.

In your spare time, make yourself a kit of three (GM, Ford and Chrysler).

You'll be surprised how handy they will be.
